August 2008 Camp Meeting Minutes
The August camp meeting was called to order by Commander Crandall and opened with prayer by Chaplin Taylor. We had the pledge to the U.S. flag and the salute to the Confederate flag. Each member gave the name of the Confederate ancestor they represent as an SCV member. We had several special guests at this month's meeting. 4th Brigade Commander A. L. Miller, Florida Division 2nd Lieutenant Commander Bob Hurst, 3rd Brigade Commander Jamey Creel, Mrs. Edna Durden, of OCR Chapter 8 introduced Florida Society OCR Vice President Paige Creel and OCR Nancy Hart Chapter 8 Secretary Margie Gamble, to the camp. Mrs. Creel is in charge of the Florida OCR's "Legacy Program" (see last months meeting minutes for details).
It seems that not enough camps participated in the bulk purchase of the 4x6 inch flags, through 4th Lieutenant Division Commander Jim Darby, 1st Lt. Commander Loyd Durden advised he is looking for another source for flags.
Adjutant Durden reported on the status of the repair of the storm damaged flag pole at the monument site. He advised it will take a 20 foot section of stainless steel pipe to do the repair. The problem is the high cost of this type of pipe right now. He is hunting for a reasonable price on the pipe. 2nd Lt. Commander Hillhouse advised he may have a piece of pipe and will check on it. Adjutant Durden advised he has the large flag at his home and it has been cleaned and safely stored.
Adjutant Durden discussed the status of the construction of the wooden Camp Sign to be placed at the monument site. Due to his work schedule and the weather he has not been able to work on this project very much. He suggested as an alternative the camp might consider having a vinyl one made at a sign shop. He had a quote of $125 for a 4 foot x 6 foot sign. After a discussion it was decided that security was the main reason to not use a vinyl sign, it could easily be vandalized or stolen. We will go ahead with the wooden sign.
The Commander brought the Camp Float project to the floor for discussion. After discussion and a lot of good ideas, compatriot Hillhouse made a motion to go with the living history decoration idea for the float, it was seconded by compatriot Loyd Durden, the motion passed unanimously.
Commander Crandall brought to the floor the topic of a camp due to be collected along with National and Division dues. After a discussion of this compatriot Hillhouse made a motion that we have a $10 yearly camp due and that the due be waived the first year for new members. This was seconded by compatriot Murrow, the motion passed unanimously.
The camp yard sale was discussed and the date set for this event will be October 4th. The location for the yard sale has not been decided at this time. Everyone needs to be setting aside items that are in good working order, to donate to this event. Compatriot Murrow suggested that we get the blood mobile to come and participate also, this would benefit both organizations. He will contact the blood bank and see if they will agree to come.
Compatriot Hillhouse asked for a couple of volunteers to assist at the Forest Festival Living history event, manning a Confederate flag display and doing ancestor look - ups for prospective members, using CD's he has with Confederate rosters. Several members volunteered.
The Commander advised the camp that due to his work load, Compatriot Whitfield has to give up his Quartermaster post. Compatriot Warf was asked to step into this position and he agreed to accept the post. A motion was made by compatriot Hillhouse to instate Compatriot Warf as new Quartermaster, the motion was seconded by Adjutant Durden the motion passed unanimously.
The meeting was adjourned and closed with prayer by Chaplin Taylor.
The next meeting will be September 25th.
