January 2009 Camp Meeting Minutes
The January camp meeting was called to order by 2nd Lieutenant Commander Hillhouse and opened with prayer by Chaplin Taylor. We had the pledge to the U.S. flag and the salute to the Confederate flag. Each member gave the name of the Confederate ancestor they represent as an SCV member.
Commander Hillhouse reported on the membership and financial status of the camp. He also advised the camp to be sure their dues have been paid for the year.
Historian Davis advised the camp that the state was in the process of buying private land adjacent to the Natural Bridge battlefield, but that this maybe on hold because of budget concerns.
Old Business:
1. We may have to go with a vinyl Camp sign at the monument site, adjutant Durden has not been able to paint one due to time restraints.
2. We need to complete our work on the camp bylaws.
3. We had in the past discussed printing confederate money, each bill having our camp information printed on the back, these were to be used as a recruiting tool. Commander Hillhouse advised that we can buy them from the SCV merchandise catalog cheaper that we can print them. He made a motion the camp purchase 200 of these at a cost of $20, the motion was seconded by compatriot Wright it was passed unanimously.
4. Commander Hillhouse advised he has plenty of the new membership applications.
5. We had discussed at an earlier meeting the possibility of the camp purchasing equipment for living history events, one of the items being a wall tent. Commander Hillhouse reviewed the information he had gathered on purchasing the tent. He asked that we wait on this purchase until further discussion at the next meeting.
New Business:
Commander Hillhouse brought to the floor for discussion the camp's involvement in the Fiddler Crab Festival on February 14th. We plan to have a living history encampment and have the camp float in the parade. We discussed the equipment we had on hand for the living history. The commander asked that each member do their best to participate in this event. He asked for volunteers for various duties.
1. Manning the recruiting table: David Durden, Charles McDonald, Neil McCranie.
2. J. T. Davis will work on restoring the camp displays, as well as working on the float.
3. Flag display will be manned by Tommy Murrow and Greg Warf.
4. Chapter 8, Order of the Confederate Rose will help work on the float.
The camp will probably have a special meeting before this event to work out further details, after Commander Hillhouse has met with the festival committee.
Commander Hillhouse went over several fund raising ideas one of the ideas was to buy flags and sell them at the local "Mud Bogs". 2nd Lieutenant Commander Durden suggested tee shirts sales also. A food booth was also suggested.
J.T. Davis will contact the folks at the bog on the beach road (Mr. Gunter) and Greg Warf will contact the folks at the "Puddin Creek Bog"( Mr. knight) for information on setting up a booth at these two events.
With no other business Commander Hillhouse concluded the meeting and it was closed in prayer by Chaplin Taylor.
The next regular camp meeting will be February 26th
