June 2008 Camp Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Commander Crandall. Chaplin Taylor began the meeting with prayer. We had the pledge to the U.S. flag and the salute to the Confederate flag.  Each member gave the name of the Confederate ancestor they represent as an SCV member.

 Adjutant Durden gave the membership report; the camp has 19 members at present with several potential members being recruited.  Adjutant Durden also gave the camp financial report.

 Camp historian J. T. Davis shared a passage from a book titled “Battle Fields and Blessings”, stories of faith and courage in the civil war. 

 A copy of compatriot Hillhouse’s design for the camp sign at the memorial site was passed around, 1st Lieutenant Commander Durden has gotten approval from Mr. Swindle to put up the sign on the site.

 The Commander  advised that the Cabbage Grove Cemetery project is still in the research stage, Quartermaster Whitfield advised the Page family would be a good contact to get information on the cemetery since their family lived in that area in the past.

 Commander Crandall read an email from 4th Lieutenant Division Commander Jim Darby, on the bulk purchase of the small 4x6 battle flags; these are handed out at parades and other events. If the whole Division puts in an order the bulk price will be cheaper. After some discussion on this purchase, 2nd Lieutenant Commander Hillhouse made a motion that we table this issue till the next meeting the motion was seconded by Adjutant Durden, the motion passed unanimously.

The Commander asked that each member consider making a donation to the Flags across Florida Project, to help finish the Tampa Flag Project.

 Chaplin Taylor advised the camp that on the 4th of July they will be flying a 20 foot by 30 foot Betsy Ross United States flag, the flag of our founding father's from the 1st American Revolution, at the Tampa flag site.

   The handouts designed by compatriot Hillhouse for posting on cars and to individuals who display the Confederate flag, were looked at and discussed. Compatriot Hillhouse will contact some printers and get a cost estimate to present at the next meeting.

 Compatriot Hillhouse presented the camp his idea, on the old flags that are replaced at the memorial site; he suggested they should be sold at a silent auction to raise money for the camp. A motion was made by compatriot Davis and seconded by compatriot McCranie. The motion passed unanimously. 1 flag per meeting will be auctioned.

 Compatriot Loyd Durden made a motion that the camp gives Henry Lee, owner of “Gun Runners” gun shop a certificate of appreciation for flying the battle flag at his business and his support for camp fund raising in the past. The motion was seconded by compatriot Warf and passed unanimously.

  Compatriot Loyd Durden made a motion that the plaques that the camp won for it’s float in the Forest Festival parade, should be displayed in a public place. It was decided that the plaques would be displayed in Compatriot Murrow’s office at Burns Funeral Home. The motion was seconded by compatriot Davis and passed unanimously.

 The Commander reminded everyone that we need to start thinking of ideas for decorating the float for this year’s festival parade. The camp discussed the school day living history event scheduled for October 24th as well as the general living history event on October 25th at Forest Capital Park.  Also discussed was the forming of a color guard, for the camp.

 The petty cash fund for the Adjutant and the Quartermaster was discussed. A motion was made by compatriot Hillhouse to increase the amount for the Adjutant from $25 to $50 and keep the amount for the Quartermaster at $25. The motion was seconded by compatriot Lewis and passed unanimously.

 The commander made a motion that OCR chapter 8, be allowed to hold their meeting at the new meeting location, at 317 North Orange Street, the same night as the camp meeting if they so desired. The motion was seconded by Adjutant Durden and passed unanimously.

 The commander continued where we left off in reviewing the camp bylaws, items were discussed and changes were made as needed, we will continue the bylaws review at the next meeting.

 The meeting was adjourned with prayer by Chaplin Taylor.
