March 2009 Camp Meeting Minutes
The Commander called the meeting to order, and Chaplin Taylor opened with prayer. We had the pledge to the U.S. flag and the salute to the Confederate flag. Each member gave the name of the Confederate ancestor they represent as an SCV member.
The commander brought to the camps attention that the date May 2nd, that we had chosen to celebrate Confederate Memorial Day, conflicts with The SCV Florida Division's reunion on that week-end. The camp voted to change the date for the Confederate Memorial Day event to May 9th, beginning at 11am. The Monument area will have to be cleaned before this event. Commander Crandall encouraged all members to attend the Florida Division reunion if possible.
The Commander gave the camp financial report. 1st Lieutenant Commander Durden advised he has ordered a flag to replace the old one on Hwy. 27. The commander read an email from the Quitman Ga. camp about their upcoming Confederate Memorial event, for details see "Area Events" on the home page of the web site.
Commander Crandall passed around an example of the bead necklaces that folks throw out at parades, his idea was to attach one of the SCV recruiting coins to the necklace and throw them out at our parade events.
Quartermaster Warf advised he intends to buy an A-frame tent, to use at the camp's living history events. He will also be checking on the possibility of the camp doing a living history / recruiting booth event at Mayo Florida's "Pioneer Days."
The commander is getting information, (dates, time, location, etc.) for the camp to participate in a living history event for Tallahassee Cub Scout Den #23.
Commander Crandall volunteered and helped the 8th Florida Quincy Young Guards at Olustee in February. Quartermaster Greg Warf and family supported the 8th Florida Quincy Young Guards at Natural Bridge. Jim Darby said to relay how much they appreciate Victor and Greg and his family, and look forward to have them help as often as possible. He encouraged all of Camp 2012 to support them in any way they can, as time and means will allow.
We had a great program presented by Chaplin Taylor, after business concluded. His subject was the burning of the New Manchester, Georgia textile mill and town by General Sherman in 1864 . Many of the mill employees were taken prisoner and shipped north, most never to return.
1st Lieutenant Commander Durden volunteered to have the program at the April meeting. His subject will be, widows of the war and their rules of living and dressing after the passing of a husband. He encourages you to invite your wife to the presentation, they will find this very interesting.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned with prayer, by Chaplin Taylor.
The next Camp Meeting will be April 23, 2009
