May 2008 Camp Meeting Minutes

The May meeting of Camp 2012 was called to to order by Commander Crandall.  The Commander handed out copies of the proposed bylaws of Camp 2012, and reviewed them with the members present. We reviewed part of the bylaws at this meeting and will finish up the review next meeting.

The Commander advised that there is a Camp "Executive Committee" being formed, this committee will meet prior to the regular camp meeting to discuss camp issues that need to be addressed at the regular meetings.  The procedure for election of officers was discussed, in the future nominees will be posted on the camp web page.  Compatriot Loyd Durden made a motion that camp officers serve a  two year term, the motion was seconded by Adjutant Durden and passed by a unanimous vote. The bylaws were amended to reflect this change.

The Commander advised the camp that he and 1st. Lieutenant Commander Durden were able to attend the Florida Division Reunion this year. He said he enjoyed it and learned a great deal. The Commander made a motion that the camp make a $100 contribution to the large flag display near Tampa, at the intersection of I-4 and I-75, this is a part of the "Flags Across Florida Project." This will add our camp's name to the display This flag display has a 139 foot pole and a 50 foot flag. This motion was seconded by compatriot Lewis and passed unanimously.

Commander Crandall advised that at the last executive committee meeting there was discussion on buying a 4x8 sheet of plywood, to make a camp sign to display at the flag and monument on highway 19 N. The sign would advertise the camp and have contacts and camp information for the public to see. A motion to do this was made by the Commander and seconded by compatriot Loyd Durden, it passed unanimously.  Adjutant Durden agreed to design and paint the sign. 1st. Lieutenant Commander Durden will check with Mr. Swindle for approval to place the sign on the site.

There was a discussion about the need for more space at the camp web site, to add more photos and other  information. Compatriot Wright advised the camp that we could move the web site to the main SCV server for a nominal fee per year. A motion was made by Commander Crandall to do this and seconded by compatriot Durden, this passed by a unanimous vote.

The commander reminded the camp that we need to start getting ideas about decorating the camp float for the upcoming year. He advised that we need to get other camps involved with us in the Forest Festival parade and events and that we need to invite folks earlier so they have time to plan to attend the event.  1st. Lieutenant Durden advised that at the last executive committee meeting that compatriot Hillhouse suggested the idea that members tell the camp who their ancestor is, that they represent in the SCV, at each meeting. All agreed it was a good idea. The Southern Heritage festival is still in the discussion stage. With all business concluded, the meeting was adjourned with prayer by Adjutant Durden. The next meeting will be June 26, 2008.
